BRS Group: The Latin American tour

Shipping broker visits the region looking for new business opportunities
Edition of March 19, 2018

A delegation of newbuilding, tanker and management executives from BRS Group are visiting Latin America, looking for new business opportunities in the region. Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Mexico are the targeted countries where the Barry Rogliano Salles representatives are meeting with liners, shippers, ports, and others to evaluate the potential of the local market. MundoMaritimo had exclusive access to company’s plans.

One of  BRS’ main interests is to be present in the region, closer to our clients and adapting our services in the specific business areas in the region since it is a niche market with a great present and an even better future. We believe that it is the right timing to do this due to the changes the region is undergoing, both political and commercial,” says Felipe Loachamin, managing trainee.

The focus of this visit is on both the tanker market and newbuilds potential. The tanker business is of special interest for BRS Group, as the company recently set up a desk in Houston, Texas, from where they will be monitoring and handling all business in the Americas time zones. “BRS should be present in the area for the tanker business. In the past 6 months, BRS has started a tanker desk in Houston, previously we had a couple offshore brokers there, but we’re expanding our pressence in the tanker market. We have a team of 5 professionals connecting all the time zones across the continent. The United States is exporting more crude, taking less heavy crude from South America (Venezuela), so we’re capitalizing on the US Golf export market,” says Nils Hansen, tanker broker.

As far as newbuilds, Wilhelm Steien, newbuilding partner, revealed that there are no official plans, but the local industry does have great potential and they are monitoring it closely for any potential developments. For the time being, newbuilgind capacity is concentrated in China, reveals Steien.
