Posorja’s road to become the new Latin American hub

Port terminal’s phase I construction is 25% completed

Since the start of works in July, 2017, the deepwater port of Posorja, located in the southwest coast of Ecuador’s Guayaquil, is already 25% completed. Investment by DP World is US$1,200 million, and the terminal is expected to be fully operational by mid-2019.

In an exclusive interview with MundoMaritimo, Luis Eduardo Pérez, commercial manager for  DP World Posorja S.A., commented that construction works are on schedule and once 75% of works on phase I are completed, works on phase II will begin.

The new Latin American hub

“Posorja’s strategic position within the South Pacific will allow the port to position itself as a Latin American hub, with synergies between liners, to include calling in Ecuador with the same ships that they currently use to call on ports in different countries, thus maximizing cargo capacity,” says Pérez.

Posorja will allow Ecuador to receive larger vessels than the ones currently calling at the Guayaquil terminals. The new deepwater port will have the capacity to serve Post Panamax ships longer than 350 meters and up to 16 meters deep. The terminal will be able to mobilize 750,000 TEU/year in phase I.  Also, our concession enables us to mobilize containerized and multipurpose cargo. Bulk and RORO are considered as part of phase II,” adds the executive.

Phase I and II

The first phase contemplates the construction of a 400 meter long dock, a land terminal of 27 hectares, dredging and an access road. It will have an annual capacity of 750,000 TEU and the navigation channel will allow for a maximum loading capacity of Post Panamax vessels crossing the Panama Canal, 400 meters long and up to 15 meters deep, carrying up to 14,000 TEUs. Phase II will have an additional 400 meter long dock and a land terminal over 25 hectares. There will also be a special economic development zone (ZEDE) to promote industrial investments that aim to strengthen and benefit Ecuadorian productivity.

Construction of the terminal creates 500 direct and indirect jobs, that will benefit the residents of the Posorja area.
